Every once in a while something new and different and remarkable gets introduced in the market, the idea behind which is so stupidly simple that you can’t help but wonder – how could this take so long?
Christian Louboutin, the Parisian designer of all things beautiful and expensive shoes has introduced to us a concept which was overlooked for being right under our noses since the human race came into existence.
We have different different skin colors. All of us. So how is it that every time before 2015 someone mentioned ‘nude‘ we automatically thought ‘beige‘? Nude = naked. Which means your shade of nude is different from that of 8 out of 10 people (that’s a safe guess). Some of us are pale vampire lookalikes, some of us are tanned goddesses and some of us are both, depending on the time of the year.
Not to mention the nature’s bestowing of olive, almond, cocoa, peanut butter and many other luscious shades of our skins. So effectively, nude is all these colors too, not just beige or peach. Nude is the color of our flesh and there is no standard for that. Its amazing how this discussion didn’t gather momentum until Louboutin did something to recognize the problem and solve it its own profitable as well as socially responsible way. He brought in ‘5 Shades of Nude‘ as a part of the brand’s nude color palette, ranging from dark to light – so you can choose the one closest to your skin tone.
As they describe it over at christianlouboutin.com, “The shoes disappear like magic and become a fluid extension of the woman’s legs, as in a sketch, elongating the silhouette.” Exactly. Does anyone remember Carrie Bradshaw’s famous ‘naked’ dress from SATC? A dress so close to the color of her skin, it made her appear naked. What would be the naked dress for someone from a different race, or many different races?
Make no mistakes, these shades (and perhaps even more variants) have always been available in the market, however under different names. Its the compilation and articulation of this simple ‘many nudes’ concept that is so brilliant, it makes us feel a bit ignorant to be treating it as a revelation in the twenty first century.
Another great example of this movement is a start-up called Nudevotion. Again, founded on the simple idea of compiling all shades of nude in all fashion categories from all major stores – making life much easier for women of all shades to find their version of nude. All fashion categories includes clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, lingerie and makeup. The site pulls out the products from its partner retailers that include Neiman Marcus, Barneys, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Shopbop and more, covering a huge gamut of brands that range from designers and luxury houses to mid-range buys and then right down to everyday affordable. You can sort the aggregated nude merchandise to light or dark shades of your choosing and shop anything from lingerie and makeup to head to toe looks.
Lingerie perhaps is a less vanity or purely fashion concerned category but more of a necessity. Having the comfort of a perfectly color-blended nude bra under a white shirt is a workwear basic for many women. Nubian Skin stepped up to the task and concerned itself with producing practical and feminine nude lingerie for women of all colors. Many lives made easier and all steps in the right direction.
