Models and some as they are popularly called, the ‘it’ girls are the quintessential faces of fashion, quite literally. While designers and their teams toil away in ateliers and studios, these gorgeous girls represent them all over the glossies and social media. While consumers admirably applaud the creative efforts behind the scenes, they also equally adore the beautiful faces on the fronts, for these are the communicators of the wonderful fantasies of the world of fashion.
Every generation gets their own rationing of pop-culture icons and as with all things human, tends to hold biases for the past or preferences for the present day newsmakers. But the truth is, all things are transitional and equal. Understandably, the fresh fashion crop of today will be considered as great and legendary years down the line as we accept Jane Birkin, Twiggy, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and the likes to be.
Here’s a look at potential fashion legends in the making, some arguably already so. In this digital age, the odds are certainly skewed in their favor but hey, more the merrier we say.
Often declared to be a bona-fide supermodel, KK has paid her dues to get there. An American fashion model, Victoria’s Secret Angel and a trained ballet dancer, she stands at over six feet tall and is a designer’s dream come true on the runway. Having been discovered at the age of 14 years, she has worked with Elite, NEXT and IMG Modeling Agencies and walked a number of shows in New York, Milan and Paris. Apart from covering the front pages of leading fashion magazines, Karlie Kloss has inspired many a designer and served as the face of their brands in advertisements and editorials. The legendary and erstwhile VS Angel Tyra Banks has stated Kloss to be one of her favorite models while John Galliano has regarded her as his creative muse.
CD is to heavy-duty eyebrows in the 2010’s, what Kate Moss was to the waif thin look in the grunged up 90’s (also controversially labeled ‘heroin chic’). This multi-talented Brit has been the face of many a gloried fashion houses, most famously Chanel (and being Karl Lagerfeld’s personal favorite) and Burberry’s campaign with the fellow Brit supermodel – yes, Kate Moss! CD was named Model of the Year both in 2012 and 2014 at the British Fashion Awards. Apart from her illustrious modeling career, she is an active singer, musician and actress while her many ramp-show assignments, editorials, endorsements and cover issues continue to gain strength with every passing year. She comes from a family of journalistic and political stalwarts, with some English royal blood to boot.
JD is another Brit beauty in the lineup with many firsts under her feathered cap. First black model to walk for Prada in over a decade and the first black model to enter Forbes list of top-earning models in 2014. The same year, she was declared to be an icon by models.com and signed on by Maybelline cosmetics to be the face of the brand. Like the others in her league, she has done numerous magazine covers, ad campaigns, runway shows and editorials for top designers and publications. In 2008, she was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.
When you start modeling for Baby Guess at two years old, you get your game down to a pat. Now again posing as the face of Guess but as an adult, GH is making waves in the fashion world for her quintessentially American blond hair/blue eyes beach babe look that has earned her the covers of many top magazines, including a spot in the annual swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. Apart from walking the ramp for major designers in New York, London and Paris fashion weeks, she has appeared in music videos, hosted shows, been on the Pirelli Calendar 2015 and has been signed on as their new face by Maybelline.
This Puerto Rican beauty is a high fashion favorite. After being signed on by Givenchy as the brand’s Haute Couture exclusive in 2010, she quickly lapped up assignments from the biggest names in couture. Apart from doing shows in world’s four fashion capitals, she has modeled for Victoria’s Secret, appeared in numerous editorials in top international fashion glossies, been a cover girl a number of times and made appearances in the Pirelli calendar. A supermodel by all standards, JS is the first Latina to have been the face of luxury cosmetics brand, Estee Lauder. She was named ‘Model of the Year’ at 2012 Style awards and has found a place in Forbes list of world’s highest paid models.
When you step into a legitimate industry to earn a living (albeit as a fashion model) with the baggage of TV reality series fame, very few people tend to take you seriously, if even that. But KJ persevered and after proving her mettle on the ramp, has gained acceptance in fashion’s inner circles. So much so, that she is cast in every Chanel show, apart from walking for the biggest labels in New York and Paris. KJ has made the cover of top fashion glossies and as a true-blue former reality star has a formidable social media following which has led to countless endorsements and the biggest one for her yet, being the newest face of Calvin Klein Jeans.
This Canadian supernova of a model is another high fashion favorite. She is known for her edgy look and eccentric poses that lend themselves generously to fashion editorials and ad campaigns. CR has walked the ramp for esteemed names in haute couture in Paris and New York, apart from being the face of many a luxury label and fashion magazines and partnering with American television’s iconic reality series ‘Project Runway’. And finally, she has the coveted Karl Lagerfeld stamp of approval as the face of limited edition Karl Lagerfeld designed Coco Cola light campaign as well as Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s collection.
AC is in a league of her own. It would be an injustice to describe as a fashion model for she has expanded her role to that of a model-at-large. She has evolved into being a successful TV presenter as well as a contributing editor at Vogue magazine. Starting out in her native city of London, she modeled for many teen magazines, designers and luxury lifestyle brands, including being the face of DKNY Jeans. Wanting to explore the world of fashion behind the scenes, she shifted her attention to fashion documentaries and journalism, interviewing the creme-dela-creme of the industry as part of the job. Off-duty, she is known for her brand of nonchalant, tomboyish personal style that has gained her a large and loyal following. She has collaborated with brands like J.Crew, AG Jeans and Madewell for exclusive collections and famously served as an inspiration for Mulberry’s ‘Alexa Bag’ whose stratospheric sales led to the brand’s commercial revival.
